Questions to Ask Your Insurance

It is important for you to understand your insurance benefits so that there are no surprises in regards to financial responsibility. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions, including…

  • Does my insurance plan cover speech therapy? CPT/procedure codes to ask about include 92523 (speech evaluation) and 92507 (speech therapy sessions)
  • What is my deductible? How much of it has been met?
  • What is my co-pay/co-insurance? Is that per day or per session?
  • Is there a set number of sessions per year that are covered? Can I ask for more when they run out?
  • Does my child have to have a specific diagnosis to be covered?
  • Do I need a prescription from my pediatrician before I start services?
  • Do I need to get a pre-authorization for services before I start? If so, how do I do that and what specifically do I need a pre-authorization for (sometimes it is for an evaluation, and other times it’s for the therapy sessions… or both)?

Be sure to write all of this information down, so that when you get an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance or invoice from your speech pathologist, you know where the charges came from. It will also help if any of your sessions ever get denied and you need to submit an appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions:

There is so much confusing information out there on how to help your child learn and communicate. Parent coaching is a necessary part of the therapy process, and we would love to share our insights with you. Here are just a few of the most commonly asked questions parents have asked us over the years:

How do I know the signs of a toddler needing speech therapy?

Every child is unique, and your child is no different. But there are some general things to look out for…. “red flags” as we like to call them… that can help you figure out whether or not your child may need speech therapy. Check out more details and a free guide here.

What is pediatric speech therapy? or a similar one… How does toddler speech therapy work?

A good speech therapist knows that in order to reach a child, you have to meet him where he’s at. For toddlers and many younger children, their main function in life is to play! So many of our speech therapy sessions look like a lot of getting on the ground, playing with toys, reading books, and just having fun with what interests your child. Don’t be fooled… it’s still work.

If your child needs to speak more clearly, we’re working on a handful of words/sounds/phrases to practice over and over to get those motor patterns built.

  • If your child needs to learn to communicate and engage in play with others, we’re working on social games and joint attention.
  • If your child needs to work on understanding language better, we’re working on following directions and building vocabulary.
  • Overall, the goal is to balance motivating your child to want to engage with you, while also challenging them to learn new skills.

What is a children’s speech therapist?

Does my child have autism?

Here at Fluens Children’s Therapy, we are not qualified to diagnose a child with autism; however, we’ve worked with numerous children on the spectrum. We may sound like a broken record here, but what we’re saying is true… every child is different, and every child with autism looks different. Check out this video for some quick tips. If you’re still concerned, ask your doctor to do a screening on your child or seek the opinion of a developmental pediatrician or pediatric neurologist who can given an official diagnosis.
