Resources For Children Who Stutter

Resources For Stuttering

In the first blog on stuttering we discussed facts about children who stutter as well as some types of disfluencies, another word for stuttering.  On the next blog on stuttering we came up with some helpful ways for you to help your kiddo. Now we’re going to point out some resources you can use time and again to assist your kiddo who stutters.

The Stuttering Foundation

The Stuttering Foundation or to abbreviate, TSF, is a website rich with resources for parents.  Whether you just got the evaluation or you’ve known for years, The Stuttering Foundation can help you.  There are resources for the parents as well as the kiddo who stutters. TSF reaches out to people who stutter from children to adult age.  Today we’ll look at their different resources, specifically ebooks, videos and podcasts. Last but not least there are resources for sale and resources that may be found in your local library.

Ebooks

One great resource at The Stuttering Foundation is a book written by an 8 year old who stutters.  Trouble At Recess, written and illustrated by Jamie, is about 5 year old Molly, who stutters and gets bullied.  The story is a fascinating and educational glimpse into the life of a child who stutters. It’s also an amazing achievement in and of itself for a kiddo of eight, whether the child stutters or not.  There are also other books such as The Stuttering Little Ballet Boy, and The Girl Who Stutters.

Videos

There are many videos on TSF that have several uses for parents.  One such video is Stuttering And Your Child: Help For Parents. It presents testimonials from parents, examples of stuttering and tips to help with stuttering at home.  Another great video is 7 Tips For Talking With The Child Who Stutters. Several professionals discuss how to create a dependable and nurturing environment for the child who stutters.  There are other videos such as Stuttering: For Kids By Kids, and even videos with Spanish subtitles.

Podcasts

Podcasts are a great way to grab information on the go.  The Stuttering Foundation has a podcast called StutterTalk, with tons of stories and information.  One of the podcasts is Helping Children Who Stutter with TSF president Jane Fraser. Some other podcasts feature celebrities who stutter like broadcaster Tavis Smiley and NBA All-Star Bob Love.  You can listen to the podcasts on the TSF website or subscribe to StutterTalk on your IPhone or Android phone.

Resources At Home and Locally

TSF provides resources like books and dvd’s you can purchase and use at home.  You can even buy posters of famous people who stutter. If you don’t want to purchase anything, that’s possible as well.  TSF provides a lengthy list of libraries in each state that carry their materials.

Stuttering Is Not Everything

Stuttering can be a daunting challenge for both parents and kiddos. TSF and other institutions exist so it doesn’t have to be debilitating.  A long list of celebrities is proof that stuttering can be minimized if not controlled. The aim is to help kiddos who stutter realize that they are loved and accepted, no matter what.  This truth alone can drastically improve how a child deals with stuttering on both a daily and future basis.
