Pediatric Speech Therapy for Stuttering and Cluttering
For children who struggle to speak fluently, everyday conversations can feel like a big challenge. Moments that should be easy, such as answering questions in class or chatting with friends, can be quite difficult to manage. And if a child stutters or clutters their speech, they can end up feeling embarrassed or avoid speaking altogether.
At Fluens Children's Therapy, we believe every child deserves the chance to express themselves confidently and clearly. Our compassionate Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) help children build the skills they need to speak clearly and empower them to let their ideas flow with ease.
What Is Stuttering?
Stuttering is a speech disorder where the natural flow of speech is interrupted. This is usually seen as repetitions of sounds or words, but it can also include pauses in speech or holding sounds for longer than needed.
Stuttering often starts in early childhood, and it can also change depending on the situation. For example, a child may be able to speak more fluently at home where they’re comfortable but stutter more at school or when speaking to new people.
What Is Cluttering?
Cluttering is another speech disorder that affects the clarity and rhythm of speech. Children who clutter speak rapidly or with an irregular rhythm. This can lead to omitted sounds, shortened words, or speech that’s difficult for listeners to understand.
A child with cluttered speech may not notice that it is happening which can make it more challenging for them to self-correct. Cluttering also tends to start in early childhood and can vary in severity or on a case-by-case basis.
Common Signs of Stuttering and Cluttering in Children
The most common signs of a stuttering or cluttering disorder to watch for include:
- Repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., “b-b-ball”)
- Prolonging sounds (e.g., “mmmom”) or pauses while speaking
- Rapid, irregular speech that’s hard to follow
- Difficulty with clarity or getting words out
- Frequent revisions mid sentence (e.g., “I’m looking for a—I need my book.”)
- Omitted sounds or incomplete words
- Tension or visible effort when speaking
- Hesitations or frequent “um” or “uh” sounds in speech
What Causes Stuttering or Cluttering in Children?
While the exact causes of stuttering and cluttering are not known, several factors may contribute, including:
- A family history of fluency disorders
- Differences in language processing or motor coordination
- Stress or other environmental influences
- Developmental delays
How Pediatric Speech Therapy Can Help Children with Stuttering and Cluttering
At Fluens Children's Therapy, our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) use evidence-based treatments designed to meet each child’s unique needs. We start with an evaluation to determine if your child is stuttering or cluttering and get more information about their specific challenges.
From there, we help your child build fluency. Therapy may include techniques for slowing speech, practicing clear articulation, or managing anxiety around speaking. With support from our experienced team, your child can gain confidence in expressing themselves and build skills that support their lifelong communication success.
