What Is Receptive Language Disorder?

Receptive language disorder refers to difficulties with understanding or processing written or spoken language. This means that while a child may have the ability to speak, they struggle to comprehend what others are saying because they have trouble connecting words with ideas.

These challenges can impact a child's ability to handle daily activities such as following directions, taking turns in conversations, and even understanding what’s happening in stories.

Common Signs of Receptive Language Disorder in Children

Some of the most common signs of receptive language disorder in children include:

  • Difficulty following simple directions (e.g., “Please pick up your toys.”)
  • Trouble understanding questions or responding appropriately
  • Struggling to follow along during conversations or stories
  • Frequently asking for clarification or repeating questions
  • Not responding to their name being called
  • Limited understanding of age-appropriate vocabulary and concepts
  • Often interrupting conversations instead of waiting for their turn to speak
  • Trouble identifying objects and pictures
  • Difficulty making friends with other kids their age

What Causes Receptive Language Disorder in Children?

Receptive language disorder does not have a known cause, but children with this condition often have co-occurring conditions, such as:

  • Developmental delays
  • Hearing impairments
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Learning differences

How Pediatric Speech Therapy Can Help Children With Receptive Language Disorder

At Fluens Children’s Therapy, our approach to treating receptive language disorder is tailored to each child's unique needs. We start with an evaluation to determine your child’s strengths and limitations relating to receptive language. Then we create a treatment plan designed to help them build the key language skills they need for success in all areas of life.

Our experienced Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) use engaging activities and practical exercises designed to improve understanding and language processing skills. Through play-based and proven treatment methods, we help children learn to follow directions, comprehend questions, and develop their overall language skills. Our goal is to empower your child to improve their receptive language skills for better social interactions, increased academic success, and stronger overall communication.
