Cat in the Hat

Summer Reading Series: Cat in the Hat Two bored kids sit in a house on a rainy day.  And then a stranger comes, a curious cat…in a hat. This is how the book “Cat in the Hat,” by Theodore Geisel, starts out.  If the name doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t worry.  He was better known as the one and only Dr. Seuss! The book talks about the Cat in the Hat, and everything he does to try to entertain the two bored kids while they are stuck in the house.  Cat starts with juggling a fish in a fishbowl, a rake, an umbrella and a dozen other things.  Then when that fails, he uses “Thing One” and “Thing Two” to start some more mischief!  In a whimsical sing-song way and in perfect rhyme, Dr. Seuss tells a story that is sure to delight the little ones, especially kids from 3 to 5 years of … Keep Reading…

Summer Reading Series: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Hey mommas and kids, it’s another installment of Jessica’s Story Corner!

This week we’re talking about “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.  This book is typically for kids ages 2-5, or those with equivalent skill level.  For younger kids check out our blog on “Goodnight Moon.”  “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is a good fit for anyone who likes good stories or caterpillars.  It’s also a treat for those who eat with their eyes!  In fact, when I pulled the book out my husband reread it and fell in love!

For those not in the know, the story takes place on a hot sunny Sunday when a cute caterpillar hatches from an egg.  This caterpillar is also incredibly hungry and goes on one gigantic food binge. **Bring on the fat pants…** Each page displays pictures of wonderful fruits, plants, and basically any kind of food the caterpillar can find.  I won’t spoil the end for you, except to say,  “a hungry caterpillar plus food equals?…”

Summer Reading Series: Goodnight Moon

Summer Reading Series: Goodnight Moon

Who doesn’t love a good bedtime story??  One of my faves, especially for the young ones (ages zero to three) is “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown.

It’s a wonderful story about a tiny rabbit and everything he sees and hears before he goes to sleep. Each page is bursting with warm colors and stunning drawings.  The story springs to life with delightful rhymes and clever language. Witness the startling beauty that is all around a simple bedroom when you just take the time to stop, look and listen.

Maybe, just maybe, if you read in a soft tone, your child will be swiftly lulled to sleep. (Yay, more me-time!! Netflix here we come…)

Activity Ideas

But “Goodnight Moon” isn’t just a soothing tale to get your tiny angel to start snoring.  It’s also a good book for fun under the sun!
